Wrestlers Take Legal Action Against Wrestling Federation

Onlinebettingsite – In a recent development, several prominent wrestlers, including Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik.  Have filed an urgent petition in the Delhi High Court against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). They accuse the WFI of conducting elections in a manner that violated the established sports code. And are seeking to have the results nullified and the federation’s recognition revoked.

Wrestlers take legal action comes shortly after the WFI announced its intention to hold national trials for Olympic qualifiers. Inviting the same protesting wrestlers to participate. However, the wrestlers believe that these trials, if conducted by the WFI in its current state. Would lack fairness and transparency, potentially jeopardizing their careers.

The petition further asserts that the WFI’s use of facilities owned by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) for these trials is inappropriate, given the federation’s current suspension by the sports ministry for “blatant disregard for established legal and procedural norms.” The wrestlers question how a suspended entity received permission to utilize government resources.

Background of the Dispute take action :

This conflict stems from the WFI’s elections held in December 2023, which were met with criticism and protests from several wrestlers. They raised concerns about irregularities in the voting process and called for the arrest of the then-president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, following allegations of sexual harassment against him.

In response, the sports ministry suspended the elected WFI body and directed the Indian Olympic Association to establish an ad-hoc committee to manage the federation’s daily operations. However, the UWW, the international governing body for wrestling, later lifted its earlier provisional suspension on the WFI, reinstating the controversial leadership.

Wrestlers’ Demands and Expectations:

The petition filed by the wrestlers urges the court to:

  • Declare the WFI elections invalid and revoke the federation’s recognition
  • Allow the ad-hoc committee to continue overseeing the WFI’s operations or appoint an administrator to assume control.
  • Prohibit WFI officials from communicating with the UWW without prior approval from the ad-hoc committee.
  • Restrain the WFI from making decisions that contradict directions issued by the sports ministry or the ad-hoc committee.

The wrestlers hope that their legal challenge will prompt a thorough investigation into the WFI’s affairs and ensure fair and transparent governance within the organization.
